Stan Lee doesn't get enough credit for occasionally having a wicked sense of humor about superheroes in his comics.

Except this story, as it turns out, is actually by Dennis O'Neil.

Still, enjoy this '77 interview, where he describes coming up with the Marvel "superheroes with problems" approach as basically a running gag so he wouldn't be bored to tears writing these stories:

Hate to nitpick, and it doesn't take away from your larger point--and that interview footage is great!--but Stan didn't have anything to do with the Dr. Strange page you posted. That story was scripted by Dennis O'Neil, and probably plotted by Ditko.

I checked the first Essential Dr. Strange, and you're right, it's an O'Neil story. Fixed!
